If you need home energy storage, buy the battery now. Using your electric car as the house battery (V2H, vehicle-to-home) is not something you can practically buy in the UK in mid-2026: the only announced consumer route is a lease bundle tied to one specific car, taking reservations for availability later in 2026, and buy-outright bidirectional chargers are still at the pre-registration stage. The wait might reward you eventually; the numbers below explain why I would not bank on it.
This is a decision article, not a compatibility list. I have not run a V2H setup; the inputs come from the product pages, the government’s flexibility roadmap and the published efficiency research, all checked on 22 July 2026.
Can you actually get V2H in the UK today?
One consumer proposition has been announced: Octopus’s Power Pack, and it is a lease, not a purchase, with reservations open and availability promised for later in 2026. You lease a V2G-enabled BYD Dolphin with a bundled Zaptec Pro bidirectional charger from around £299 a month over 24 to 48 months, with free home charging credits up to 12,000 miles a year. It is vehicle-to-grid, exporting at peak times, rather than a home backup product: you can hold back a reserve of at most 30%, and the economics assume the car is plugged in 12 hours a day, 20 days a month.
If you already own your EV and want to buy hardware to make it power your house, there is effectively no mainstream route yet. The one DC bidirectional home charger headed for general sale, the Wallbox Quasar 2, was pre-registration only when I checked, with a UK price still unconfirmed (the converted European figure is around £6,100 before £1,000-2,000 of specialist installation) and a very short compatible-car list. That is the honest availability picture behind every “your EV is a giant home battery” headline.
Why does the car’s big battery do less than it looks?
An EV pack holds 40-80 kWh against a wall battery’s 5-15 kWh, and that comparison sells the dream. Two facts shrink it. First, the car drives away: the biggest battery in the house is the one most often absent, which is exactly why Power Pack demands those long plug-in hours. A wall battery is always home.
Second, efficiency. Published measurements of AC vehicle-to-grid systems put round-trip efficiency anywhere from the low 50s to the mid 80s percent, depending on hardware and load; premium DC systems can do better, but the figure for any specific bundle is rarely published. A stationary home battery typically returns 90-95% of what you put in. Each stored kWh simply does more work in a wall battery, and over thousands of cycles that gap compounds.

What about your car’s warranty?
Nissan is the clear one: it states publicly that using an approved bidirectional charger does not affect the LEAF’s battery warranty. BYD’s published UK warranty for the Dolphin contains no V2G exclusion, but no explicit approval either. Inside the Power Pack lease the car is Octopus’s asset, but the public material does not spell out who bears degradation or end-of-lease battery costs, so those are the lease clauses to read. Bolting a third-party bidirectional charger onto a car whose maker has said nothing is where the warranty risk genuinely lives.
On degradation itself, independent research widely cited from the University of Warwick found that controlled, shallow V2G cycling adds minimal wear, on the order of a percent a year or less, and can even be managed to benefit the pack. The engineering worry is smaller than it sounds; the paperwork worry is the real one.
Do you need DNO permission?
Power Pack’s grid-export route requires G99 approval from your network operator, and Octopus handles that step inside its install. A self-arranged bidirectional setup would go through the same DNO process as any export-capable install, typically 30-60 working days; our DNO registration guide covers how that works. Energy that never leaves your property is a different case, but every current proposition, Power Pack included, is an export product.
Should you wait for V2H, or buy a battery now?
Buy the battery now if storage is solving a problem you have this year: cheap-rate arbitrage, solar self-consumption, backup. It is available, efficient, and the 0% VAT rate on installed home batteries runs only until 31 March 2027. A battery bought today starts doing the job immediately instead of waiting for a market to arrive; whether it pays back, and how fast, depends on your tariff and loads, which is the calculation to run before buying either way.
The wait does have real, dated milestones behind it. The government’s Clean Flexibility Roadmap commits to a formal consultation on V2X charge-point communication standards by the end of 2026, and to legislation, with no date attached, that would remove consumption levies from re-exported electricity: the change that would genuinely transform V2G economics. Those are reasons to expect the market to mature, not reasons to leave a 2026 storage need unmet.
Waiting makes sense in two cases:
- You were leasing a car anyway and the Power Pack bundle suits your driving: you get the V2G experiment at roughly zero capital, with the warranty question inside the lease.
- Your storage need is genuinely optional, you can plug in long hours, and you are content to revisit after the end-2026 standards consultation shows how fast compatible cars and chargers arrive.
What should you do while the market matures?
Size the storage problem first: batteries for solar panels: types, sizing and costs covers capacity and price, and solar, EV charging and a battery together covers how a car fits an existing solar household today, without bidirectional hardware. If a quote is on your table, remember the VAT clock: the 0% rate ends 31 March 2027, which is comfortably before the V2H market is likely to be an ordinary purchase.
